The default web browsing experience on ARM-based Windows PCs just took a big step forward. Microsoft has released its first version of its Chromium-based Edge browser for ARM-based Windows 10. Describes an update for Windows RT 8.1 RT feature improvement. Locate the app that you want to pin. Select All Apps to search for the apps. Search the Most Frequently Used apps list. Use Search to locate the app. Hold down the Shift key, press and hold (or right-click) the app, and then select Pin to Start list.Or, you can drag the apps to the Pinned List directly. Chinese Language Problem after installing patched Windows RT Image I'm having an impossible time changing the display language from chinese to english. I'm not given an option to change teh display language from anything other than simple chinese. I have changed the entry language to english. But can't read anything. I've got a surface 2. New Edge - Zero chance. Porting Chromium to Windows RT 8.1 - Impossible without massive rewrites, it's just not going to happen. Porting Chromium to the leaked Windows 10 - Not impossible but unlikely at this point. I saw someone is working building Firefox but I think that also ran into issues.
[German]It seems that users of Windows RT systems has to say goodbye to their devices. The Internet Explorer shipped with Windows RT / 8.1 as a browser no longer can be used to access Microsoft accounts. The browser is outdated.
Warnings that browser support is about to expire
Already in February 2020 a user in the US-Surface-Forum under Microsoft Answers complained that his Surface RT tablet with Windows 8.1 RT would soon be useless.
Surface RT Piece of useless ****!!
OK, so I have a Surface RT running windows 8.1. And I, like every other poor unfortunate ‘Surface RT’ owner/user, am being continually informed by numerous different web platforms that my browser is soon to become obsolete and so I need to change/update to a newer compatible browser!? Suggestions given for this are ‘Chrome/Firefox/Edge/Opera’, any of which I would be happy to use! Unfortunately, my ‘Surface RT’ doesn’t seem to share my willingness for change!? In fact it flatly refuses to give any consideration for this required change!! Basically, it just keeps telling me that it won’t run that App, or that App, or any **** App in the vast world of Apps that seem to be compatible with every other OS but this useless ‘Surface RT’ piece of ****!!! Therefore please explain how I am supposed to address this situation, in order for me to be able to continue using this ‘Surface RT’!!?? And if you are going to inform me that it is not possible to update this system you had better include in your response a list of the computers that you will be replacing it with!!!!!!!!!
Already in February he received more and more warnings from websites that his browser would soon no longer be supported. A browser update was suggested – which is not possible with Windows RT/8.1. If you search the internet, more and more users complaining already in 2019 that Internet Explorer under Windows RT was hardly usable for surfing (crashes, the browser was reported as outdated etc.).
No more access to Microsoft accounts
Then a few hours ago I came across the following tweet from Zack Bowden, which outlines the problem. The Windows RT device owners can no longer access the Microsoft web page of their Microsoft account.

The user is informed that Internet Explorer in Windows RT no longer meets the minimum security requirements. The user should update the browser to continue accessing the information. The only problem is that there is no browser update for Windows RT/8.1. And this although Windows RT 8.1 should be supported until 2023.
Browser For Windows Rt 8.1
Barb Bowman states in this tweet, that for some people the Sidekick browser from the Microsoft Store still works when installed as an app on Windows RT 8.1. This is discussed in this Microsoft Answers forum thread.
In September 2019 there was an issue – an update disabled a certificate, so the browser did not work anymore. I had reported that in the blog post Surface RT/Surface 2: Update KB4516067 revokes certificates.

It was only a matter of time: You can now run conventional x86 Desktop apps on your ARM-based Windows RT tablet, such as the Surface RT or Asus VivoTab RT. x86 games such as Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (video below) and small utilities such as WinRAR are confirmed to work on Windows RT, with the developer promising to support uTorrent and some other games in the future.
The tool, which seems to be called Win86Emu, is essentially an x86 emulator or software abstraction layer for Windows RT. If you’ve used DOSBox, or some kind of game console emulator, Win86Emu is very similar: You run Win86Emu, select which x86 app you want to execute, and then — if everything goes to plan — your x86 app will appear. In essence, Win86Emu grabs the API calls made by the x86 app, converts them into the Windows RT equivalent, and then passes them along to the WinRT kernel. (See: Under the hood of Windows 8/RT.) As far as the x86 app is concerned, it’s running on a normal x86 Windows machine.
As with any emulator, though, there are caveats. As long as your x86 app uses the emulator’s supported APIs, you’re fine — but at the moment, Win86Emu only supports a limited subsection of API calls, and some translations from x86 to the WinRT kernel aren’t perfect. As a result, HoMM3 works under the emulator, but it doesn’t have any music. Emulation is a lot slower than native execution, too — and coupled with ARM’s wimpiness compared to the latest x86 silicon, don’t expect your Windows RT tablet to run Crysis.

This hack follows on from last month’s jailbreak of Windows RT, which gives you the ability to run non-Microsoft apps on the Desktop. The original jailbreak has since been turned into an easy-to-use tool that executes every time you log in — and indeed, you need to run the jailbreak before you can use Win86Emu. If you own a Windows RT tablet, XDA-Developers has a nice list of Desktop apps that you can run on jailbroken devices.

When Microsoft told the world that it was splitting Windows 8 into x86 and ARM versions, we made the bold announcement that Intel’s upcoming Atom processors would kill off Windows RT. You see, the only advantage that ARM SoCs currently have over x86 is reduced power consumption — but in the next year or so, Intel will catch up. Coupled with the fact that Microsoft made the crazy decision to lock down Windows RT’s Desktop, and that Windows RT lacks the native ability to run x86 apps (Microsoft could’ve easily included its own emulator), and it’s really rather hard to imagine Windows on ARM beating Windows on x86.
Windows Rt Stands For
Now that a couple of hackers have jailbroken Windows RT and created an x86 emulator, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft reacts. Microsoft’s claimed reason for locking down Windows RT is stability and reliability — Windows RT is consumer-oriented, and it doesn’t want ma and pa to install jury-rigged x86 apps that will cause their system to crash. Instead of a complete lockdown, though, Microsoft could’ve just buried the switches deep within the Control Panel, so that power users at least have the option of running x86 and Desktop apps on their Windows RT tablet. Who knows: Maybe the locked-down Desktop and lack of x86 emulation is actually the result of an internal, political struggle at Wintel’s hegemonic HQ.
