Traktor has no hot cues so Rekordbox hot cues are converted to regular cue points in Traktor. If any hot cue is on the same spot as a regular cue, only one is preserved. If you want hot cues in Rekordbox, you can enable the Add hot cues option, see above. Traktor has no colored cue points. If your controller is compatible with RekordBox or Traktor then it should work. For example: DDJ-FLX6, DDJ-1000, DDJ-800, DDJ-400, DDJ-200, DDJ-RZX, DDJ-RZ, Traktor Kontrol S2, S3, S4, S8, Z2, Z1. Will it work with my Pioneer CDJs? In this Youtube video, I'm going to show you step by step how to map your Traktor Kontrol Z2 mixer to Rekordbox DJ. For any questions please feel free to lea.

  • Hi Guys,

I play both bars and clubs, and in general I’ve used CDJ1000s for the club or if playing house in a bar, and I use Traktor with a Kontrol S2 the rest of the time (and for making mix tapes at home). Have started using CDJ2000s more often now and would like to use just USB sticks with them. So I’m wondering if installing Rekordbox will affect how all my music files are handled with Traktor. e.g will it mess up the track grids/tags and other data?

Maybe I would have to copy some tracks to the USB (I wouldn’t need ALL my music on Rekordbox) and just manage that with Rekordbox?

    Cheers in advance!

    Adam.

You have just hit the proverbial nail on the head. I have stated a few times that I consider this to become the biggest problem with digital DJ-in the upcoming decade, unless something is done to correct it (and you never know what is happening behind the scenes already, right?).

I believe that all your information (at least the common stuff that has no bearing on program specific features) should travel with the track, not stay behind in a (proprietary) database. So if you set cue points, loops, beat markers and such for a track on whatever platform you use (Traktor, Serato, VDJ, RekordBox, Engine, any of the iPad apps) it should be stored with the track and be available when you load the track in any of the other programs.

    Doesn’t work that way (yet?!).

    How it does work though:

    • You do your thing in Traktor
    • I actually think you can then load your tracks into RekordBox as well (since they both don’t move tracks someplace different (like iTunes always wants to do) and run RekordBox. So no need to copy actual music files to another place for use in RekordBox.
    • You can set playlists in RekordBox and just export whatever tracks/playlists and even CDJ setting to USB sticks.

You will however NOT be able to use the cues, loops and such you set in Traktor in RekordBox or the other way around.
So, keeping things in sync could be a bit tricky and at least a lot of manual labor.
Major point for you again: I think you can let both Traktor and RekordBox use the same folder for their music files. They will just both make databases of the added info elsewhere. If I am wrong about that I hope another reader can correct me here.
It may be wise to set the analysis features of RekordBox so that stuff that you already did in Traktor (BPM and Key info for example) are not re-analyzed in RekordBox. You’d want RB to use just the info that is already in the tags right.

    C.

If you are useing a Mac there is a program called Rekord Buddy that lets you sync your Traktor and Rekordbox liberary. So as I asume you have all your songs already beatgrided set hotcues in Traktor with Rekord Buddy you can sync them to Rekordbox and get all the cue points and info synched in one go. I’ve used it for some time now and it’s realy a good program for this.

sorry to deter an old thread, Im a traktor user (S4mk2), and starting to want to set loop points and hot cues, and also using rekordbox for CDJ gigs. I first put all my tracks in itunes and organize it in playlists there. Im trying to get the best workflow from there on (only to have the same playlists on my ipod for backup when computer crashes).
I have been very unhappy in the amount of work that i need to get my tracks from my itunes library (on an external HD) into my traktor collection on a USB stick. i might be doing it wrong though.
the process from itunes to rekordbox seems way easier.
my question before i start the hard work on all my tracks: is it better/ faster to do traktor to rekordbox or rekordbox to traktor for setting up cues/ loops (via rekord buddy- gosh 4 bloody softwares to go thru…)
im sure im not the only one in this situation. what worked best for youz?

Seriously, this is my main reason for not wanting more than one kind of software. It is easy enough to use iTunes in both platforms, but as soon as cue points and loops and such are involved, it becomes a whole new ball game with only an external tool like RekordBuddy helping out.

You can download your library at any time by pressing the Download button in the top of the screen when you're logged in.

You can also download your library in the Download Library menu and download either a Rekordbox, Traktor or VirtualDJ version of your library.

To learn how to import your downloaded file back into Rekordbox, Traktor or VirtualDJ: read on below.

Serato uses the Companion App to write file tags.

Rekordbox 5 & 6

Importing a Rekordbox XML file is a bit complex, but just follow the steps below. These steps are the same for Rekordbox 5 and Rekordbox 6. Rekordbox 6 is fully supported.

First we have to set the Rekordbox XML location in the advanced preferences menu. Only after that will the XML menu appear.

  1. Make sure you didn't change anything in Rekordbox since you last uploaded your library since those changes may be overwritten.
  2. Download the Rekordbox XML file
  3. Open the Rekordbox preferences in the File menu

Traktor Rekordbox

  1. Go to the Advanced tab and set the Imported Library location to the XML file you just downloaded.

  1. Make sure that 'Rekordbox xml' is checked on the View tab under Layout.

  2. Close the preferences menu and restart Rekordbox.

  3. You will now see the new rekordbox xml option in the menu. Your downloaded XML should already be loaded but if it isn't, just press the tiny Reload button. If you don't see the XML tab, make sure you restarted Rekordbox.

Kontrol
  1. The easiest thing you can do now is to right click your top most playlist called Playlists and click Import Playlist. This imports all playlists and all tracks inside any of your playlists. If you have tracks that aren't in any playlist then you may need to import the entire collection too. Importing the entire collection may take a while so it might be faster to only import specific playlists.
  1. Warning: The latest versions of Rekordbox have a bug that prevents importing of XML files. Until Pioneer fixes this, you should use version 5.6.0 to import tracks. This bug also exists in Rekordbox 6. More info and the download links to the older Rekordbox can be found here

Since changing the location buried in the preferences is a pain, you should set it to your download folder so you can just replace the old rekordbox.xml when you download a new one and you only need to press the Reload button in Rekordbox.

Traktor

To import an NML file back into Traktor follow these steps:

  1. Right click Track Collection and select Import another collection
  1. Find the NML file you just downloaded from rekordcloud.
  1. Traktor will ask you if you want to keep your file tags or use the tags from the collection you're importing. Select collection here.
  1. Sometimes playlists don't show up immediately, restart Traktor if that happens.

  2. Your tracks and playlists are now updated and you can start using them.

If you relocated or deleted any files: you should right click a track in your collection and select Check Consistency. This lets confirm relocated tracks are found and allows you to easily remove deleted tracks from your collection.

VirtualDJ

You should have downloaded a ZIP file. This file contains your database.xml with all your track information and a Playlists folder.

Importing a VirtualDJ library is just replacing these files.

  1. Make sure VirtualDJ has the following settings:
  • getRatingFromTags: No
  • getCommentFromTags: No
  • getCuesFromTags: No
  • useKeyFromTag: No
  1. Close VirtualDJ

  2. If your music is on an external/network drive, delete the database.xml file inside the VirtualDJ folder on that drive.

  3. Go to your main VirtualDJ folder: Documents/VirtualDJ

  4. Delete the Playlists folder and the database.xml file here.

  5. Copy the contents of your downloaded ZIP file into your VirtualDJ folder. You should have a database.xml file and a Playlists folder in the same place again.

  6. Start VirtualDJ and your library is updated. You will find your playlists under Lists & Advice -> Playlists

Notes

VirtualDJ doesn't export empty playlist folders. So if you had empty playlist folders that are now missing, it's because VirtualDJ never included them in your database backup.

Traktor Vs Rekordbox

If you notice that your tracks aren't getting updated, it may be because you did not delete the database.xml file on your external drive. This file contains old information and VirtualDJ takes priority on this file. After deleting and importing it, VirtualDJ will recreate it again with the new track information.

Rekordbox Traktor S4

Serato

Serato uses the Rekordcloud Companion App to write the tags of your music files and to update your crates. You can download the Companion App here

After downloading your library with the Companion App, just open up Serato and you're done.
