  • Feb 28, 2019 Citrix Receiver is a new version of Citrix Client which is a program that allows secure access to cloud computers. It is often used for cloud applications or for enabling remote desktop access to certain servers within the cloud. It is primarily used within enterprise but there are a few programs installed for end users that utilize it too.
  • How to use Citrix Receiver after its installed.
  1. In a web browser, please visit https://ctx.rutgers.edu/ We recommend using Google Chrome.
  2. Login with NetID credentials. Note- You may be prompted for two-factor authentication.
  3. Click “Detect Receiver” button (blue button in middle of the screen).
  4. Download and run the Citrix Receiver/Workspace installer.
  5. Go through the default Citrix Receiver /Workspace installer options. When prompted by the intsaller, do not select the “Add Account” option and click Continue. Then complete the install process as needed.
  6. After Citrix Receiver is installed, go back to your web browser and click “Continue” (blue button in the middle of screen).
  7. Click “Open Citrix Receiver Launcher” on Windows or the “Open Citrix Workspace Launcher.app” on Mac. Chrome users should make sure to enable the “Always allow ctx.rutgers.edu…” checkbox before proceeding.
  8. Click “Apps” button (on top bar)
  9. Select an application under “All Apps” section to automatically open it with Citrix Receiver or Citrix Workspaces.Note: Do not click on the targeted application button more than once, depending on your computer specifications loading times may vary. Your application will then load in a separate window.

Opening and Saving Files
Within your remote app session you may want to open or save a file from/to your personal computer. The process for doing so is quick and easy.

Citrix Receiver Use
  1. For example, within the SPSS application go to File -> Open or Save As.
  2. If you are using a Mac, you may be prompted for file access. Select “Read & Write”.
  3. Under the “Look In” dropdown, scroll down to your personal computer listed as “Local Disk (X on…)”, where X is a local hard drive letter and name assigned. Select it.
  4. Browse to the path on your personal computer that you wish to save/open within your Citrix application. For example, the path to “Downloads” on Mac would be Users -> username -> Downloads.
  5. When you are done using the Citrix app, quit Citrix Receiver/Workspace app normally and then Log Off from Citrix Storefront in your web browser.

What is 'Activating the Citrix Workspace App' and Why Would I Want to do it?

If you have already installed the Citrix Workspace App and are logged into Virtual Desktop, you can 'activate' it on Windows or Mac OS. This is an optional procedure that has the following benefits:

  • You don't need to open the Virtual Desktop web portal in a web browser to launch Virtual Desktop applications.
  • When the Citrix Workspace App is activated, icons for your Favorite Apps are placed into your Start Menu in Windows, along with your locally installed applications or in your User folder in Mac OS X.
  • You may add/remove/launch applications from a local Citrix Workspace App window that looks and functions just like the Virtual Desktop web portal.
  • When activated, the Citrix Workspace App supports saving your login credentials so you don't need to re-enter them when you launch a Virtual Desktop application.

How to Activate the Citrix Workspace App

Citrix Receiver User Authentication

  1. Once you have installed the Citrix Workspace App and logged into Virtual Desktop, click your name in the upper right corner of the Favorites page (where your application icons are) by the search bar and click 'Activate'.
  2. You will be prompted to download a file called receiverconfig.cr. This tells the Citrix Workspace App the location of the Virtual Desktop service. Download the file and open it.

    NOTE: If you see a message asking what program to use to open the receiverconfig.cr file, choose the Citrix Workspace App.
  3. After you open the file, the following window will appear. Click Add.

  4. A login window appears. Log in using your HawkID and click the 'Remember my password' box if you want the Citrix Workspace App to retain your credentials.

    the Citrix Workspace App puts an icon in your Windows System Tray in the lower right-hand corner. After closing the Citrix Workspace App, you can open it again by clicking this icon.
  5. After login, the Citrix Workspace App window will populate with your Favorite Applications. You may launch/remove/add Virtual Desktop applications using the the Citrix Workspace App window outside your web browser.
  6. In Windows, your Favorite Applications will appear in your Windows Start Menu, along with your other locally-installed applications.

    In Mac OS X, icons for your favorite apps show up in your Applications folder.
